Question:

How can I transfer the license permanently to a new computer?
How can I temporarily transfer the license of a registered computer to a different computer?
How can I interchange the licenses of two registered computers?



Answer:

If you activated the license online by entering a Product Key, you can return the Product Key and then use it for a different computer. You can return and activate the license only if the computers have Internet access. The computer where you want to return or activate the license does not have to be online all the time. It is enough if it is online while you are returning or activating the license.


Returning a license
To return a license in online mode

  • Open the 'License settings' dialog box: Services application -> Utilities -> License settings
  • Write down the Product Key for the license you are returning.
  • Click License activationon the left. Then click the license you want to return.
  • Click Return license.


You can now activate the license on a different computer.


Activating a license
If you want to transfer the license permanently, you can activate a license while you are installing Allplan or after you have installed Allplan. By activating a license, you connect the license with the new or other computer. As a result, you can start Allplan on this computer.
If you want to transfer the license only temporarily, install Allplan as a viewer on the second computer and
activate the license later.

To activate the license during installation:
Start Setup and follow the instructions displayed.

  • In the 'Installation Option' dialog box, select the 'Enter Product Key' option and click 'Next'.
  • Enter your Product Key.
  • Click 'Activate license'.


To activate the license after installation:

  • Open the 'License settings' dialog box: Services application -> Utilities -> License settings
  • Click License activationon the left.
  • Enter your Product Key.
  • Click Activate license.



Here comes a practical example:
If you want to use a Product Key for running Allplan on two or more computers, you must use computer A to return the license before you can use this license with computer B. To return the license, open the Services application -> Utilities -> License settings -> Return license. If this computer always uses the same Product Key, you can find this Product Key in the box below License activation. This box always displays the last Product Key entered.

If you switch between several licenses, it is a good idea to save the Product Keys used in a text file on the desktop. This way, you can copy the Product Keys quickly and easily to the license settings.


Note: When license cannot be returned due to defect
If your computer has a defect and does not start anymore, or your hard disk has crashed and you had to install a new one, we need a statutory declaration from you. You will receive this declaration after your situation has been checked by the technical support team. Please contact your local Allplan Support with a brief description of what happened.

How can I import data from an earlier version?



Answer:

You can import data from the last three Allplan versions.
Consequently, the following import operations are possible:

Target version <- import possible from version

2017 <- 2014
2016 <- 2013
2015 <- 2012
2014 <- 2011

2012 <- 2008
2011 <- 2006
2009 <- 2005
2008 <- 2004
2006 <- 2003

We cannot guarantee that data created in older versions can be imported and edited. The conversion of older data may be incomplete, which may affect intelligent components in particular.


1. Archived data from an earlier version (not older than three previous versions):

There are two ways to convert the data to the current version:

  • Import the project backups created and archived using the
    Services application -> Data Backup -> Import -> Projects.
    After importing the projects, convert them by opening each project once.
  • Import the backups archived using the
    Services application -> File -> Restore documents of any version to &apos;...\Extern&apos;.
    The data are written to the external path.
    You can now process the converted data in ProjectPilot.



2. Archived data from an older Allplan version (older than three previous versions):

  • See whether you can use the approach described in step 1 to import the old projects.
  • If available, it is a good idea to install an old Allplan version. Import the backups created and archived into this old version and convert the projects using the Services application. If you have imported a complete project backup, convert the data by opening each project once. When finished, repeat this process with a newer version (up to three versions later) until the data are up-to-date.
  • If an old Allplan version is not available, you can also have the data converted by Allplan. Please note that this service is not free of charge. Please contact Technical Support -> support.de@allplan.com.




Notes:

  • You can convert the data of all projects at once. Read the following FAQ in Allplan Connect: https://connect.allplan.com/en/faqid/20090408124904.html
  • If enough hard disk space is available, you are advised to keep and maintain the projects so that Allplan automatically converts them to the current version whenever you upgrade.
  • If there are project-specific smart symbol catalogs, you should open the smart symbol catalog once to convert the data.

Question:

I would like to install Allplan, which requires a Product Key. How can I install Allplan or activate the Product Key later?


Answer:

Allplan is using since version 2016 a new protection system. Licensing is based on CodeMeter by Wibu Systems AG since then. You can no longer use Softlock or hardlock with Allplan 2016 and higher.

Allplan requires a Product Key. Using this key, you can activate your license online. The Product Key is a unique, 26-digit character string. You can use it to activate a license for Allplan.
You can find your Product Key in Allplan Connect. Go to http://connect.allplan.com/license
Note: The license is downwards compatible til version Allplan 2016 even if a higher version is displayed.

You can activate a license while you are installing Allplan or after you have installed Allplan. By activating a license, you connect the license with the computer. As a result, you can start Allplan on this computer.

The easiest and quickest way to activate a license is to do this online. In other words, the computer has Internet access.

To activate the license during installation:
Start Setup and follow the instructions displayed.

  • In the 'Installation Option' dialog box, select the Licenser activationoption and click Next.
  • Enter your Product Key.
  • Click Activate license.



To activate the license after installation:

  • Open the 'License settings' dialog box: Services application -> Utilities -> License settings.
  • Click License activationon the left.
  • Enter your Product Key.
  • Click Activate license.



Notes:

You can find your Product Key in Allplan Connect. Go to http://connect.allplan.com/license
Click Profile -> License administration.
Only administrators can use this function.

How can I permanently change the path settings presented for selection in specific tools (save, import)?



Answer:

When you save, import and export elements or files, Allplan automatically proposes a specific folder where the data is saved or taken from.
You can specify which Allplan file type is saved in which folder. These folders are automatically presented in the "Save" dialog box of the relevant file type. However, you can change them at any time.

To set this proposed folder on an individual basis, do the following:
Select the Tools menu ->Options... -> Desktop environment(Allplan 2009 and earlier: Tools -> Options... -> Global Options-> "Settings"tab).

You can click thePAah setting sbutton to the right of Folders for savingto define defaults. You can choose Project, Private, Custom or Last for the path setting:

  • Project: the file type is saved in the current project (not available for NDW and NPL files).
  • Private: the file type is saved in the user&apos;s private project.
  • Custom: you can specify any folder for the file type. To select the folder, click the path displayed in the Folder column and enter a new path or click ... in the Browse column and select the path in a dialog box.
  • Last: the file type is saved in the path you selected last.

Question:

What license issues do I need to consider when upgrading from Allplan 2016/2017/2018 to Allplan 2019?


Answer:

Installation options during Setups

First-time installation with copying data (default): this option copies and converts the data of the previous version to the new version. You can choose to transfer projects, too. This option does not change the previous version.
Upgrade: this option also transfers the data to the new version. However, you can no longer use the previous version after upgrading.
First-time installation: this option installs Allplan 2019 in parallel to the version you are running. However, your data will neither be transferred nor converted. You can find more information in the help. Just press F1 during Setup.


Depending on the licensing system you use, you need to consider different points.

1. Upgrade Allplan 2019 – stand-alone workstation
The license for Allplan 2019 updates automatically. Start Setup and follow the instructions displayed. When you are prompted to choose the license configuration, select Use active license. Follow the installation instructions.
Note: The licenses only update automatically when you upgrade. To install Allplan 2019 on a new computer, please read on connect.allplan.com/license within the menu item Information on Installation and Licensing the instructions Transferring license to a new computer.
You can find your Product Key in Allplan Connect as usual. Go to: connect.allplan.com/license

2. Upgrading Allplan 2019 with a license server
Start by updating your license(s) at the license server. After this, upgrade the clients. To do this, start the License Settings program on the server. Click License Activation on the left, and then click the license you want to update. Click Update License.

After updating your license(s) you can upgrade Allplan at the clients. Start Allplan Setup and follow the instructions displayed. The license server license will be detected automatically on the network. When you are prompted to choose the license configuration, select Use active license. Follow the installation instructions.

Add-on: If your license server displays a detailed version number (build ID) directly in the lower left corner of the program License Settings, it is usually compatible with the new version and does not need to be updated. You only need to update the license(s).
If you still want to update your license server, download the software for the license server from the Allplan Connect service portal. Detailed instructions can be found at connect.allplan.com/license under the menu item Information on installation and Licensing' and the instructions 'Updating license server and licenses'.

Note: You can update the licenses only at a license server you have already installed. If you want to switch to Allplan 2019 and move the license server to a new server, please read on

Downloading licenses from Allplan Connect

Question:

Why is Allplan running so slow?


Answer:

Check the following points:

1. Current version
Make sure you work with the current Allplan version.

  • Do the following or ask your system administrator to do this:
    Open Allplan and click the ‘?’ icon in the upper right-hand corner. Click ‘Update Allplan’.
    Select 'Find now'. If Allplan finds updates or hotfixes, download the installation packages.
  • Deactivate the virus scanner while your are installing updates or hotfixes. This might require administrator privileges. Contact your system administrator if you have problems.
  • Right-click the Allplan icon on the desktop. A shortcut menu opens.
    Select ‘Run as administrator’ and click ‘Yes’ to confirm the following message.
    As a result, Windows security settings do not block the installation.



2. System requirements:
Check the hardware and software required for your Allplan computer.

3. Hotline tools:
Start the Services application, open the ‘Service’ menu and select ‘Hotline Tools’. To save your settings, select the following tools.

- savestd: Saves user defaults.
- savereg: Saves CAD registry settings.

Start the Services application, open the ‘Service’ menu and select the following ‘Hotline Tools’:

- cleanup: Initializes the display.
- cleanstd: Resets CAD defaults.
- cleanreg: Resets CAD registry settings.

Check whether this has solved the problems.
If this is not so, restore the settings you just saved. To do this, start the Services application, open the ‘Service’ menu and select the following ‘Hotline Tools’:
- reststd: Restores saved user defaults.
- restreg: Restores CAD registry settings.


4. Color scheme selected in Allplan:
Start Allplan, open the ‘View’ menu, point to ‘Toolbars’ and select ‘Customize User Interface’. Open the ‘Customize’ tab and set ‘Color scheme and icon design’ to ‘Windows’.


5. Check the availability of all projects that are not online (if you use Workgroup Manager):
Start Allplan, open the ‘File’ menu and select ‘New Project, Open Project’. Deactivate ‘Check availability of all offline projects’.


6. Virus scanner
Check whether an anti-virus program is running in the background of the computer or server.
If so, reduce protection to "programs only".

Scanning "all files" can take a long time, considerably slowing down your computer when you switch between projects or exit the program.
You can exclude the Allplan installation folders from real-time scanning.When you start the Services application, you can see a list of the folders to be excluded.

Changes in the settings of the virus scanner only come into effect when you re-start the computer.


7. Aero desktop effects
Deactivate the Aero desktop effects of Windows.
To do this, open the Control Panel, select ‘Ease of Access’ and go to the ‘Make things on the screen easier to see’ area.
Select the ‘Turn off all unnecessary animations (when possible)’ option.


8. Name resolution on the network
If Allplan takes several minutes to start, name resolution on the network may not work.
To check this, do the following:
Right-click the Windows Start Button, select ‘Run’, type in ‘cmd’, click OK, type in ‘Nslookup’ and press ENTER.
Go to the line following the > character, type in the name of the Allplan data server and press ENTER.
The reply starts with the name and address of the server providing name resolution.
You can find the name and address of the Allplan data server in the second group.
If problems occur, contact your network administrator and ask him or her to configure name resolution correctly.


9. Speed of Allplan projects
Check whether some Allplan projects are slower than other Allplan projects.
Start with the empty project and check whether it is slow too.
After this, select any other Allplan project.

If it is only the current project that is slow, the problem may be caused by the data of the current project.
In this case, the data of this project must be analyzed in detail.

10. Network: checking out Allplan using Workgroup Manager
If you use Allplan with Workgroup Manager, you can check whether the problems are caused by the network. To do this, check out the workstation with the project in question and use the project on the local Allplan workstation.
You can find detailed information on checking out an Allplan workstation using Workgroup Manager in the
Services application. Open the ‘Help’ and select ‘Workgroup Manager’.

After you have checked out the workstation, Allplan no longer accesses the central file storage of the server.
If this has solved the problems, they are caused by the network. In this case, the network must be checked in detail.
Contact your network administrator and ask him or her to do this.

If the project is still slow, the problem may be caused by the data of the current project.
In this case, the data of this project must be analyzed in detail.

11. Log files and system information files
If all the points above do not solve the problems, technical support requires more system information about the computer running Allplan.

  • So, we would be grateful if you could send us a support request (Allplan Hotinfo with Allplan logging).
    To create a support request, start the Services application, open the ‘Service’ menu and select ‘Create support request (Hotinfo)’.
    Several dialog boxes open. Select ‘Technical Support Allplan’ and ‘Enquiry with Allplan logging’. Enter all the data required. Finally, click ‘Finish’.
    Another dialog box opens, prompting you to start Allplan. Click the ‘Start Allplan’ button.
    Allplan starts, logging all processes.
    Try to reproduce the problem as exactly as possible.
    Exit Allplan as soon as possible, reducing the data in the log file to a minimum.
    Then click ‘Next’ to generate the support request with the log file.

  • To analyze the Windows system environment, we would ask you to send us the logs created by Windows Event Viewer of your computer.
    To start Windows Event Viewer, right-click the Windows Start Button, select ‘Run’ and type in ‘eventvwr.msc’.
    You can also type in ‘Event Viewer’ in the search box of Windows. This displays the link file to the Windows event logs.
    Using Event Viewer, create *.evtx files for the application log and the system log in the ‘Windows Logs’ area and for the ‘Administrative Events’ log in the ‘Custom Views’ area.

Question:
Which server or server operating system can be used for data storage of Allplan.

Reply:
Since Allplan 2018 for pure data storage we recommend as a server operating system Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2016.

Please note also the compatibility to the used client operating systems when selecting the server operating system.

Windows Server 2008 R2 - Windows 7
Windows Server 2012 R2 - Windows 8.1
Windows Server 2016 - Windows 10

When you want to install Allplan on the server operating system (e.g.Citrix), you have to consider the corresponding system requirements. For Allplan 2016/2017 that eg is: Windows Server 2012 R2.

Notes on NAS systems:

NAS server are not generally recommended. Because the product variety and quality is very diverse, no effective quality control can take place. We can give no guarantee about operability. In the past we had performance or stability problems, false representations up to the loss of data in some cases.

This phenomenon occurs most in NAS systems of the lower price segment, which have not installed sufficiently fast hardware. If nevertheless a NAS system is to be used we recommend generally a high-performance hardware and the use of the operating system "Windows Storage Server 2012".

Question:

I want to run Allplan on a terminal server. Can I use any other terminal server than Citrix?



Answer:

Microsoft terminal server or Horizon is not approved for Allplan.
In addition, running Allplan on a terminal server requires an Allplan license server for managing the Allplan licenses.
If you have only used stand-alone licenses until now, you must purchase the additional ‘license server’ option. Should you have any questions, please contact your sales partner.


VM Ware (Horizon) or RDP is not approved for Allplan. This means that you do not get any support for this constellation.
You may not have any problems with the current Allplan version. However, future developments will not take RDP or VM Ware into account. Consequently, this functionality may be limited or not available at all in future Allplan versions.

Citrix is the only terminal server that is approved for Allplan.

Question:

How can I restore a lost building structure or layout structure?



Answer:

To restore a lost or corrupt building structure or layout structure, you can do the following:

  • Close Allplan.
  • Open Windows Explorer, go to the central file storage folder of Allplan and open the "Prj"folder. Open the corresponding project folder and the "BIM" subfolder.

    Note:
    If the "Same folder name as project name" option is not selected for the project, a number is used for the folder name in the "Prj"folder. In this case, open the Services applicationand select the woprohotline tool (Services application -> Service -> Hotline Tools -> wopro). Select the corresponding project by double-clicking its name. An information dialog box shows the folder and file name of the project.
  • You can find an XML file for each structure in the BIM subfolder.


Building structure:
Allplan_BIM_BuildingStructure.xml

Objects derived from building structure:
Allplan_BIM_Views.xml

Plane model:
Allplan_BIM_LevMo_"name of model".xml

Layout structure:
Allplan_BIM_LayoutStructure.xml

  • To restore the building structure from a backup, rename the existing file "Allplan_BIM_BuildingStructure.xml" "Allplan_BIM_BuildingStructure.xml.old", for example.
  • Switch to the "Backup"folder, which you can also find in the"BIM"folder.
  • Select the most recent file that had been created beforethe building structure was deleted, for example, "Allplan_BIM_BuildingStructure.xml.27.5.2008--10-32-21.bak". The characters in bold indicate the date and time of the backup. Copy this file to the "BIM"folder.
  • Rename this file by deleting the characters after ".xml". Now the file name is "Allplan_BIM_BuildingStructure.xml".
  • Restart Allplan. The last version of the building structure is displayed in the "Open on a project-specific basis"dialog box again.




Note:

Using Allplan 2009-2 and later, you can restore the layout structure from a *.bak file straight from the "Open on a project-specific basis: layouts"dialog box.

  • Right-click the topmost structural level in the layout structure (project name) and select Load layout structure favoriteon the shortcut menu.
  • Open the last version of the Allplan_BIM_LayoutStructure.xml file in the backup folder mentioned above.


If the *.bak files are not displayed, please follow the steps described above.
